Sarah Wettstadt’s MicroComm offers a variety of opportunities for those in science that are looking to improve their communication skills. Her academic background and experience in communication offers a particular skillset that researchers can benefit from. She describes:
As I mentioned in my last email, even though I left academic research, I still want to advance science and the scientific field. I just decided that I want to do so by helping scientists and sharing science with the world instead of doing lab research.
However, as a previous scientist myself, I often saw in seminars, papers or conferences, that scientists seriously struggle talking about their research in a way so everyone gets it.
This is why I want to take that burden off researchers. I want to help them communicate their science, by:
- giving them the right tools so they can improve their communication skills
- taking over their science communication projects and disseminate their research
Sarah is accomplishing these points through her blog SciComm News and the SciComm Society. She concludes:
Is there anything right now that keeps you from sharing your science with your audience? Tell me all about it and I’ll be glad to read your message and make sure to provide you with the right resources that you need.
While Sarah offers her services with this question, she also provokes us to self-reflect on the struggles we all face at some point in effectively communicating our work with others.
